Mendocino’s own roving canine reporter, Hairy Putter, will be bringing you a first paw account of his experiences during visits to various establishments or locations that have advertised themselves as being “Pet Friendly”. Each place will be rated on their effort to cause lots of tail wagging satisfaction and truly make the effort to fulfill a canine’s desire.
Hairy Putter is a Cairn Terrier that lives on the Mendocino Coast in California. He previously lived in Salt Lake City. He has been a runway model and appeared at various charity benefits on local television networks: ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, and CNN nationally. Recently, Hairy has appeared in print ads for Mendocino County and Little River Inn. And, in 2009, Hairy was declared the Official Canine Ambassador of Mendocino County by Visit Mendocino County, Inc. In September, 2010, Hairy was promoted to Director of Barketing for Visit Mendocino County, Inc.
His favorite thing to do is running on the beach and playing in the ocean. His favorite television show is the re-runs of Wishbone on PBS. Hairy is a Capricorn.
Hey Hairy
I’m new to Anderson Valley & was told about you at a recent AVA Winery function. I run a Tasting Room in the Madrones in Philo, CA called Berridge Wine Company. Please let’s get together soon so I can share with you some of my Newly Crowned Gold Medal Winning 2009 BERRIDGE AVA Medocino Pinot Noir. It pairs perfectly with yummie bones & I’m sure you’d be pleased. You & your four legged friends are always welcome, and I look forward to a meet & greet… heck I’d love to be included in your quest!

Thanks for contacting me. Expect to see me soon – I’ll be stopping by.
Hi Hairy – love your blog. Very helpful when for a visit to Anderson Valley this past weekend. I would recommend checking out Phillips Hill in Philo – great wine and dog-friendly. Be sure to say hi to Jackson, the resident pooch.
Thanks for the suggestion. I will check them out.
Hi Hairy, Are you available for a relationship? I am single and a hot Italian woman street dog from Southern Italy. I was rescued by 4 American ladies and brought to live in Sun Valley Idaho. I have my very own book called “From Italy With Love” that I would love to send to you as a gift because we both help our communities. All the proceeds from my book go to my friends at our Animal Shelter. So far, we have donated $1000.
Please send me your address and I will send you my book. You will see how cute I am and possibly we can get together and do an event sometime.
xoxo and a bow wow, BELLA
Don’t forget to look me up on my facebook page bellasunvalley. Once we are friends, I can post you as my Mendicino reporter partner.
Thanks, Bella
Hi Hairy!
My mom was delighted to find your Blog! We have a beautiful, ocean view, vacation home that has always catered to well mannered “K-9″ kids. While I spend as much time coastside as possible, we travel a great deal and are always on the look out for “like minded” inn keepers too. Thanks! Please add us to your growing list of pet cozy lodgings. My mom is adding a link to your blog on our site: http://www.seahorsecottageatalbion.com Dogs rule!! Best wishes, Marley
Thanks, Marley, for letting me know. I will add you to the list!
Dear Hairy, We just finished staying at Sweetwater Spa in Mendocino and will follow you recommendations on our way back to SAn Francisco. We will stop in Gualala and try Saint Orres. Fritz (the Westie), Ineke and Bill.
Hey,
I just came across this website, and thought it be a great idea to introduce our motel to the pet friendly people as well. We do accept Pets at our motel, The Old West Inn, in Willits, CA. Could you please add this motel on your brochure as well. The motel website has everything listed about this property.
Thanks,
Roshan.
Manager,
The Old West Inn.
As a matter of fact, you are in the new 2010-2011 Pet Friendly Travel brochure. The new edition just came out and is available at the Visit Mendocino County offices.
Thanks for the generosity!
we look forward to it.
Management.
Hi Hairy, I’m excited to find a fellow canine reporting extraordinaire such as myself! I live in Sonoma and am the girl about wine country up here in our neck of the vineyards. I’ve been all over Napa but spend most of my time in Sonoma these days. Let me know if you ever make it up our way. We’d love to meet you and I hope you check out my weblog too! http://www.dogs2cents.com
Woof,
Lucy
Love the photo of you at Lake Herman Reservoir!
Hairy,
I’d sure like to know what beaches you run on. Last time I tried it was in winter with my two human friends on a deserted Manchester Beach….except for one young park ranger. He said he saw us with his binoculars. I had a leash on….it just wasn’t attached to anyone at the time. ;-(
They had to pay a BIG fine while enduring surly comments from this unpleasant fellow. Are all Mendocino rangers like this???
Zella the Rhodesian Ridgeback
A big fine? Yuk! That is as bad as getting a fly in your mouth!
There seems to be a lot of stories about fines. If you download my pet-friendly brochure listed on this blog, it tells you which beaches require leashes or which are off-leash, and I am sure there is more. Also, ask your local innkeeper for recommendations.
One of my dads, lets me run freely, while my other dad looks down his nose disapprovingly. He reminds me of a prison guard, but I know he really loves me and is only thinking of my well-being. DARN!
Hairy:
Businesses and lodging accommodations along the Mendocino Coast have seen the light. No, not the Lighthouse – they’re joining the ranks of being “dog-friendly”… and that has become big business.
At Mendocino Preferred Vacation Rentals, we joined those ranks a long time ago and our vacation rentals are even more popular (pupular?) as a result. And we do it up in fashion for our dog guests – when they stay with us, there’s a ribbon-wrapped dog-bone placed next to the brandy decanter and glasses.
That is totally great!!! I love promoting our area. Would you happen to have a spare dog-bone with the ribbon????
Hairy:
Of course, we have a spare dog-bone with a pink ribbon just for you… I hope that color is to your liking?
Just stop in at our Mendocino office at the corner of Lansing and Ukiah Streets… the big blue building.
Hi Hairy!
We are really pup friendly and one of your very best fans works here. How about paying us a little Hairy visit and bring your big boys with you.
Cowlicks is open every day of the week now and you know what that means!
Hope to see the three of you very soon!
BooDog says Hi and that if you let his mom know -she’ll be sure to bring him along for a romp!
c
It’s no secret that the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens is one of my favorite places to go. After all it is treats at the door, Cowlick’s ice cream inside, and treats when you exit. What could be better. I’ll tell my dads to take me there soon.
Harry saw you mentioned on SF Gate this morning. Nice article! We are working our way through the list of dog friendly wineries in Napa. I’m now inspired to add Mendocino to the list too. We will probably head up this spring from SF. We may ping you before we plan our trip for your top recommendations!
Jinenne from Bean and Olly
I am more than happy to help you with recommendations. Please check out my Mendocino County pet friendly travel brochure. The link is under the Blogroll section.
Hello Hairy, this is Fritz the Westie. My pack and I got some really good travel ideas from your blog, but I have to tell you that your dads must be mistaken about you being a cairn terror. A handsome dog like you is obviously a west highland white terrier like me. Not that there’s anything wrong with being a cairn … but you should be allowed to revel in the full glory of being a westie! Luf, Fritz
Thanks for the compliment, but I really am a Cairn Terrier. I am such a light straw color that I look white, especially when photographed.
Hi Hairy,
Here you are at the Friends of the Mendocino Coast Shelter Halloween Contest. Our mom was there taking pictures (so what else is new???) and yours is great! Check out the others, too.
Your mom takes GREAT pictures!!!! http://www.sorkindesign.com/09-halloween/FOMCA4.html
Hi Harry,
It’s me, Riley. How’ve you been? Haven’t seen you since the PUP PJ Party.
Wanted to tell you she’s at it again – this time my person is dressing up like SantaDog, and because I’m a good sport, I’m going along with the high-jinks, this time as a ReinDog. The idea is to raise money for the Fort Bragg Dog Park Landscaping Project – can you imagine? These people think it’s a good idea to get rid of the mud? People have the strangest ideas about what’s fun!
Anyway, we’re inviting people and dogs to join us in the Holiday Lights Parade, Dec 5th in Fort Bragg. A $5 donation gets you a pair of lighted antlers AND helps fund the landscaping project. You should come! Tell your person! Tell your friends! But be sure to tell Johanna too so she can make certain she has a pair of antlers for you. Email her at MCDOG@MCN.ORG to find out more or let her know you’re coming.
See you soon, Riley the ReinDog
PS I have a cool poster I can send – let me know if you want me to email it.
I’ll be there on the 5th – sounds like fun. And, yes, please send me your cool poster. See you in two weeks.
We got your Pet Friendly Travel brochure at the Navarro Winery. My mom loves all the information. We went to Delmere Seaside Cottages in Fort Bragg. They are definitely dog friendly. I had a view of the ocean from our deck. There was a short path to a private cove where I could run “off leash”. I was in heaven!!! We also went to the Botanical Gardens–I had to be on a “leash”, but I was given a dog biscuit, water was available, and I loved walking all the trails among the plants and out to the beach. In case you want to know, I’m a young terrier mix who came from our local shelter in Dublin, Ca, but I live in Pleasanton.
I am glad my travel brochure was of help to you. I had my dads put it together to help us all have a better vacation.
I was just wondering how we can get added to all your pet-friendly publications as I do not see our property there: Shoreline Cottages (see website link). Feel free to contact us with any questions: 707-964-2977.
Thanks!
I will be glad to add you to the next printing. Thanks for making me aware that you are pet friendly.
Hi Hairy,
Will you come kayaking with us? Cate and Jeff (our parents) are hosting a Noyo Dog Paddle on October 11 from 1-3 pm at Dolphin Isle Marina to benefit MCDOG Project Groundcover. More information can be found at http://www.liquidfusionkayak.com
We hope that you will come!
Best of days,
Bear and Aften
Great!! I have my own life jacket, so “Have life jacket, will paddle.” I’ll have one of my dads call you this week.
The reviews continue to entertain and inform. Keep them coming.
Hilary and David

I would like to invite Hairy Putter and all to come for a visit to our pet friendly establishment..Newly Renovated Super 8 Ukiah…also would like to find out how do i get my hotel listing in your “mendocino pet friendly brochure”.
I would love to come over for a visit. And, thanks for letting me know that you are pet-friendly. I will put you on the list for inclusion on the next edition of my pet-friendly brochure.

Hairy – come join us at the Halloween K9 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, October 31st at Lake Mendocino. Dogs win custom printed dog bowls; categories (small, medium, large) & receive a bandanna (owners get one too). It would be nice to have a “celebrity” dog participate. This one of the few official events whereby the owner participates with their dog and the dogs win. There is also a category with no dog. Individuals can “rent-a-dog” for an additional fee. The “rent-a-dog” is provided by the Humane Society for Inland Mendocino County on the event day. Information can be found at http://www.rdysetgo.com, click on calender, then go to October and click on the Halloween K9 5K page. The beneficiary is the Humane Society for Inland Mendocino County. Bring your friends. If you want to join us, call me at 707-468-0213 and we’ll get you entered.
This sounds like a lot of fun! I’ll tell my dads about it.
Hi Hariy,
It’s me, Riley. Did you see my picture on Fortbragg.com’s blog? I’m looking very cute in my nightgown! Are you coming to our party for doggies wearing pjs? It’s free, this Friday, Aug 7th in Fort Bragg as part of the 1st Friday Art Walk fun. MCDOG is sponsoring it, they’re the people who started the fenced dog park in Fort Bragg and the off-leash beach at Noyo Harbor. There’ll be awesome prizes and plenty of dogs showing off their snazzy jammies. And dog friendly businesses will have paw print balloons out front so you know which businesses on the art walk want you to come on in. Go to the blog at http://www.fortbragg.com/blog/2009/08/pup-pj-party/ for details – and of course to see me in my PJs!
I plan on being there – wouldn’t miss it!
Hairy, you are TOO cute! You must take some fun vacations at all the pet friendly inns on the coast! Come to the Stanford Inn and meet our “inn dogs” Murphy & Gypsy! they just hang out in the lobby all day long. It is a rough life! Are you a wizard?
If I were a wizard, I wouldn’t be working for a living. I have met Murphy and Gypsy – they’re great!
I would like to invite Hairy Putter and all to come for a visit to At Last Farm Dog Day Camp in Mendocino. The camp is located on organic farm with a puppy playground and many fenced areas to explore.
I would love to. I frequently recommend people to At Last Farm Dog Day Camp.
Hairy, If your schedule permits, please spend some time on the Mendocino south coast…and review some of the pet friendly accommodations (Mar Vista Cottages in particular), a Pooch getaway called Bed & Bone in Point Arena, and Adventure Rents Canoes & Kayaks where well-behaved pets are welcomed to accompany their masters in canoes and kayaks (and swimming too) on the lovely Gualala River. If you stop by Adventure Rents…be sure to say “hi” to our adventure dogs, Kodi and Polly.
Not a problem, I love Gualala and the Point Arena area.
Congratulations- the reviews are brilliant and you are a star.
Are you also known by the name of Shamus?
I am afraid I am stuck with only one name. Three years ago my dad’s named me “Hairy Putter” when I was a puppy – that’s all I have been called.
